This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
