This Dominik Diamond Unofficial Video Game of the Year Roundup for This Year
So, what did you think of 2025 in your family? Was it truly wonderful as you pretended on social media? Full of A-grades for the children and elaborate dress-up birthday parties for the grownups? Or was it a sea of disappointment with only rare entertaining flotsam? Could any part be authentic, or have we all become digitally altered AI slop beings with perfect smiles?
I've assembled the family for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to reflect on the most important thing in any given year: which video games we enjoyed the most. Without further ado:
Release First Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"It’s not my definitive list."
On her phone, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate decent healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In the actual world."
Release Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I suggested it. Point taken.
Title Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into theatre school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her character has a blooming utopia with far better healthcare than her older sibling has in real life.
Title the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Game I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he complains, I reply that I am doing this to toughen him up so he can be a man and play games for adults. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted deck building digital pastime, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that constantly evolve their range is you wake up one day and understand it is all just an attempt to suck you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a legendary franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the start. I wish I could dispatch my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just lacked the time or headspace to give it what it needed earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I will be playing this in the late night after family time.
Title That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was last year's surprise hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is incredible. It just gets each element right. Its gameplay loop is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different wild cards are so creative it has become a game I literally would play any time. Add in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an absolute pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Title I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I critiqued how a specific bug in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I present that verbatim, because I appreciate the effort, and she is obviously an astute judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is flawless if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my mid-fifties. I was around back when many games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Toss-up between questionable alliances that raised eyebrows, and high launch costs. Both difficult to justify and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names called from the back door at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or phone use, but it aches like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
