The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, disclosed that he will personally create the controversial flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest announcement deepens the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain how the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol for Support
The entrepreneur revealed through social media how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, which match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that was first established in 2016 for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated that he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, after many years of involvement, citing worries that its independence was undermined following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
