Scream Original Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallen Characters
It has been established that a trio of different characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though dying in prior movies. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a small cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he got the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the phone call. I recall the small talk. I recall him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While many longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others come back persists. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way still living in a strange shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of classic horror movies, also exists.
Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
