Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Uninterrupted Oil Supplies to India in Snub of Washington Sanctions

The announcement came during a summit where both heads of state met in Delhi and asserted their relationship were “resilient to external pressure.”

A Signal Directed at the United States

The statement, delivered Friday, seemed to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, that have repeatedly attempted to urge New Delhi into scaling back its historical links with Moscow. The backdrop comes after previous US actions, such as the imposition of trade penalties targeting New Delhi over its buying of discounted Russian crude.

“Moscow remains a reliable source of energy resources and everything necessary for the development of India’s industry,” he remarked. “Russia is prepared to keep guaranteeing the steady delivery of energy for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, without mentioning oil specifically, reinforced the sentiment by saying that “energy security has been a robust and crucial pillar of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Challenging American Pressure

Prior to the talks, via a television interview, Putin had challenged American pressure regarding India's energy purchases. He argued, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our nuclear fuel, why shouldn’t India have the identical right?”

Putin's arrival was his first journey to India after the start of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations engaged in a deliberate show to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the heads of state persisted strongly.

A Personal Welcome

Taking an notable step, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin as he disembarked. Both leaders shared a warm hug like longtime companions before having a private dinner together.

He referred to India's relationship with Russia as “a lodestar” and said it was “built on reciprocal esteem and profound confidence.”

Reaffirming Strategic Ties

The bilateral summit resulted in multiple key agreements in the fields of defence and trade relations. One significant result was the signing of an strategic roadmap aimed at 2030, which targets to boost mutual trade to $100bn each year by the end of the decade.

Furthermore pledged to reshape their military partnership. Even as Russia continues to be India's primary exporter of defence equipment, the volume has diminished over the past decade as India aims to broaden its sources.

The joint statement emphasized plans for the joint production of sophisticated weapons platforms, although explicit reference of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were left out.

Overall, Moscow and Delhi restated that during the “current complex, difficult, and uncertain geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership stay strong to external pressure.”
