Outrage Erupts as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Backlash

Figures from across the political divide and the entertainment world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a substantial sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's post was swift and scathing.

“What a appalling and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the remarks. She pointed to previous comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Rebuke from His Own Party

Some Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and mental health within families.

Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his political party to justify the comments.

The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the shooting of another individual.

An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
