New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities shared surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
