Israelis mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace talks continue
People have assembled around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official memorials until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The representative explained the day's discussions finished without significant progress, amid differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.
Essential Issues in Negotiations
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- Future administration of the territory
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until each abducted person return not a single person will be secure."
"After we see everyone home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.
In front of the leader's home in the capital, people gathered to show their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Protester a participant explained: "We must do every compromise required for the captives to return. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of the population want the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the music event, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality districts and in the east side area of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"When the dusk comes, the fear arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, clinging, particularly my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
Health Emergency
