International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Hamas in Search for Bodies of Captives in Gaza

A Red Cross official stated that its representatives accompanied members of Hamas into areas of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by Israeli military authority to support the search for the bodies of Israeli hostages.

Truce Agreements and Captive Remains Return

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on 10 October, the group is required to return the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has consented to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

The spokesperson added: “The parties to the conflict determined the procedures of the operation and delegated the Red Cross to act as a neutral intermediary. We was not involved in the discussions.”

The official additionally explained: “Our team was not involved in the physical hunt for the deceased nor does it engage in the physical recovery of human remains.”
