Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
