From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.

Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.

Concerns Raised by Redactions

While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.

“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure

However, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.

The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.

Yet some are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to launch the attack.

“This is quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement

Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.

Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued

However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the files' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen information.
