British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
